His grandfather, Marcos Alonso Imaz (nicknamed "Marquitos"), won five European Cups playing alongside Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas for the legendary Real Madrid side of the 1950s, scoring in the 1956 final.

A winger for much of his time in the Madrid academy, Alonso was only shifted to full-back in his late teens and many of the attributes that distinguished him as a forward-thinking youngster remain key aspects of his game.

4. Still has a solid defensive grounding

There is simply no way that Conte would have sanctioned the signing of Alonso if he didn't believe the Spaniard could defend his position -- particularly after loaning out Baba Rahman due to the very same doubts.

Alonso enjoyed three full seasons as a regular left-back for Bolton, Fiorentina and Sunderland before Sousa shifted him into a more advanced role last season.

He also possesses excellent stamina and his positional versatility will give Conte more tactical options.

Expect some warm embraces when Manchester United visit Stamford Bridge on Oct. 23, even if Jose Mourinho isn't involved. Alonso was only two years younger than Mata when both men were striving to gain recognition in Madrid's undervalued youth academy, making them often teammates.
